Pregnancy and the dentist

Pregnancy is beautiful and important period in a woman’s life.

As a result of the increase in hormones during pregnancy, gum inflammation, including swelling and bleeding (pregnancy gingivitis), is often observed.
Pregnancy gingivitis generally appears from the second to the third month of pregnancy and, if left untreated, can lead to periodontitis.
Studies have shown that compared with women with healthy gums, women with periodontitis have the tendency to give birth to premature and underweight babies.
When a woman is planning a pregnancy, it’s necessary that she visit her dentist to check for dental caries and gingivitis in order to prevent problems during the course of her pregnancy.
A pregnant woman should pay particular attention to oral hygiene and should avoid frequent consumption of sweets, which increase the tendency towards tooth decay.
It’s wise to avoid taking medication during pregnancy, however if necessary there are pregnancy-safe medications, which should be taken only after consultation with a gynecologist.
Major and/or time-consuming dental work should be put off until after the baby’s arrival. However, if dental work is necessary, the best time is during the second trimester.
It’s a myth that a woman’s teeth decay in pregnancy because the baby takes calcium from the mother. Gingivitis and poor dental hygiene can lead to dental loss.
A dentist can help prevent dental problems in both the mother and the fetus.
